Zeitz MOCAA – Museum Of Contemporary Art Africa

The Zeitz MOCAA (Museum of Contemporary Art Africa) held it’s grand opening from 23-25 September 2017, with thousands of Capetonians making the most of the offer of free entry over the course of the Heritage Day long weekend. We went through to have a look and brought a camera along as well.

The iconic building in which the art gallery is housed is the centre piece of an area of the Cape Town waterfront that has been the subject of much redevelopment in recent times, with the building lending its name to what has become known as the ‘Silo District’. For many years the enormous concrete grain silos building stood as the most recognisable feature of an area of the Cape Town industrial harbour that was largely inaccessible to the general public.

The building opens up some incredible views into the working harbour and over the city centre towards the backdrop of Table Mountain, creating new perspectives from which the public can view their city. We suggest also heading to the rooftop bar of the Silo Hotel to see the best of these views!

The history of this industrial building has been well-preserved in the redesign and repurposing of the building, from the rusty metal grain-processing machinery placed at the entrance of the art gallery, to the main internal space which has the appearance of having been carved out of the cylindrical concrete silos.

As you might be able to tell we were perhaps slightly more excited by the architecture than by the art itself (and if we’re honest we probably still felt that way as we left), but we love the fact that visual art is not only being given a prominent platform in our city through the Zeitz MOCAA, but is also being expressed through the impressive architectural design of the building itself. We would definitely recommend heading through to have a closer look.
